GO Green, GO Local, GO Gilligan’s!

At Gilligan’s our efforts to be good stewards of the environment are consistent and expansive. Not only do we recycle conventional items, but we also seek the use of sustainable and reusable materials that positively affect the natural habitats of South Carolina. We use recyclable materials and feature a comprehensive recycling program. Our largest undertaking is our ongoing Oyster Shell Recycling Program with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Our energies are focused on the importance of the shell to local marine life and our commitment to local oysters and domestic and local shrimp. Returning shells to local beds is important for three reasons: filtering water, providing habitat, and preventing erosion. Oysters filter approximately 2 ½ gallons of water per hour, thus improving the quality of water naturally. Oyster reefs provide habitat for many marine creatures: especially, shrimp, crab, and fish.. These reefs are also a natural barrier that aids in preventing erosion. This past Oyster Season, Gilligan’s recycled over 300,000 pounds of shells and returned them to the DNR for placement. We are hoping that our efforts will make a small but positive impact on preserving and restoring South Carolina’s natural habitat.
